Examination Of A Difficult Person

1,220 words; about a 6 minute read

Mission: ARYL 1X04: All the Friends We Can Get
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: Backpost

The examination had gone just as planned, in fact coordinating with Petty Officer Dovria had been the hardest part of it all, making sure that she was available to arrive at sickbay early enough. It was to be a comprehensive examination, full body scans, blood analysis, brainwave analysis, literally as much of the works as possible, but with a catch: Secrets could be kept in only two ways; If one of the two people were dead, or if both people were in on it for the same reason.

That was how it was that Petty Officer Dovria, who was NOT a doctor, but who was familiar enough with all aspects of an examination and Trill physiology, being one herself, and Commander Valerie Novis, the subject, arrived at sickbay over an hour before Doctor Johnson was due in, fully 28 hours before the deadline that had been imposed on her. The scans took nearly an hour to make and alter to omit one physical fact involved, then recorded as per normal procedure. "And as you can see, Commander, your blood chemistry is perfectly within norms for someone in your position, no neural degradation in the conjunction, but you're also not showing any symptoms of an abnormal connection."

"Which is a relief..." Valerie stated in the silly linen robe she'd been asked to put on for the examination, "I'm still having issues with one of the four, but it sounds like it's a personal issue, not a communications one." They remained cryptic about things even though they both knew her secret. You never knew who would just walk in on them. As she watched, The nurse deleted the true recording that she'd kept on her tablet for this particular reason, then pulled up the one that had been uploaded into the system to display on the screen in the examination room, right alongside the neural scans, which remained unaltered because there was no way to use those against her, she and her symbiont were one complete mind, inseparable until death.

"I am a bit concerned about some of your bone structure, though, Commander." The voice of Emilie became more stern, "You had a broken bone about fifteen months ago in your record, but that tibia doesn't look like it was healed properly or fully. We can probably book you in for some remedial therapy to build it back up properly."

Walking in, Cas looked at his patient. "You are one hell of a patient Commander." He commented as he looked at the scans. "If this was a few centuries ago we would have to rebreak that bone and reset it. Luckily for you. Its a little bit easier." Reaching over grabbing some more instruments. His coat opened up revealing a small hand phaser holstered in his belt.

"Well, Doctor, it's amazing what a few centuries can do." Valerie patted the leg where she had taken a rather hard impact in a combat situation, one that had gotten past her guard to devastating effect, "It hasn't bothered me after it got healed, so I suppose I never really noticed. It was a pretty busy time when it happened. Her eyes had caught a look at the phaser and she used the words to exhale and relax her body, in case she had to move quickly.

"Shouldn't take more than twenty, thirty minutes, don't you think, Doctor Johnson?" The perky tone of Emilie's voice cut in over hers, "I'll admit I'm still getting used to the set-piece operations of a medical bay, just as I was telling you the other day."

"Call me Cas... or Doc..." He paused, he looked at the records, and paused for a moment hesitating. "Yeah... if that..."

"Then, Commander Novis, if you'll please take a seat right there," Emilie gestured back to the medical bed, "We will get the process started."

"Now look here, Petty Officer," Valerie began to argue, "I need to get back to the bridge to make sure all of the tactical stations and sensors are tied in properly. This is an optional thing, it doesn't have-"

"Commander." Emilie stated more firmly, her eyes brooking no argument, "Is it an elective procedure? Yes. But taking a minimal amount of time to repair something that will prevent a 'minor' injury from becoming a potential major injury? That's just common sense."

The Commander took a glance towards the door, weighing if she could get out. There was no doubt of it, actually, but how little she'd have to fight both medical personnel was also paramount on her mind. "Then I'll come back when we get underway to the Klingon Neutral Zone. We can do it then."

"Half hour Commander. I know your lets do it later. Its going to be a hunt and capture to get you back in here." Cas replied as he pointed to the biobed.

Emilie gave Valerie a look that informed the Commander that she wasn't about to get away from this, but Valerie had already begun to move over to the biobed in resignation, "Fine. Thirty minutes, I'll even grant you forty-five." It was a grumble that really was only half-hearted, "Let's get it over with."

"Very good." He replied walking over to a counter with various instruments. Picking up a scanner for the routine check up, it wouldn't give him the more detailed readings but it would give him the main things he would need to know.

Emilie moved over to the table and picked up a hypospray, checking the contents with a quick look and moved back over to the biobed, waiting for the Commander to get up, "Just lay down, Commander, I'm going to sedate you while we work on you, for our own sake." She cracked a slight smile, "It'll make the time go by faster, too." It was another grumble by Valerie, but she obeyed. A few moments later, her breathing turned regular as the hypo took effect and Emilie smiled at Castiel, "We're ready, doctor."

Walking in, "So much for chatting with the patient, but it'll do." Cas replied as he took one glance over her file once again as he turned to her. "It seems, she's very apprehensive about who checks her out, any idea why?"

"We're a species that's still new to the Federation." Emilie explained, "While I'm not worried about you misinterpreting something that you see on a scan or in the chart, some of our people, like Commander Novis, are still more than a bit paranoid if one of our own isn't involved. There are actually two subspecies of Trill on Trillius Prime and there have been mistakes made already since we joined the Federation." She gave a shrug, "Some people."

"I'm not one to judge, and I am very private about what goes on behind the examination curtain. Trust is something I know however, has to be earned."

"Then I suppose that starts right here and now, Doctor." Emilie gave him a shrug and went over to where the Commander lay, beginning to undo the trousers that were in the way of where they were going to work, "Let's show Ms. Novis how we plan to do things here on board, why don't we?"

"Absolutely." He replied as he walked over to his table. "Sooner we start the sooner shes out of here."
